Teeth Stains – Causes, Problems, and a Proven Solution

The causes of stains on the teeth are varied, and depend mostly on your lifestyle and habits. These stains can be extrinsic, intrinsic, and also age-related. Extrinsic teeth stains are on the surface of the tooth, and these form when residue from foods or drinks build up in the protein that covers the tooth enamel. Intrinsic tooth stains are stains that occur beneath the tooth’s surface. In this instance, the particles responsible for the staining build up within the tooth enamel below the exterior of the tooth. As for age-related stains, these can be both intrinsic or extrinsic, but are a result of discolouration over time. The core tissue within a tooth also naturally turns yellow over time, meaning as you get older you’ll probably notice more staining.

These stains can present themselves in numerous ways, and will vary in appearance and colour. A yellow colour is common for those that smoke or chew tobacco, or consume tea, coffee, red wine on a regular basis. This staining can also be caused by poor oral hygiene, which is why taking care of your smile is so important. Brown discolouration is also commonly associated with tea, coffee and red wine consumption, but also more serious issues such as tooth decay that has been left untreated, or tartar buildup. Other stains can also appear white as a result of too much fluoride, or even black. The latter is usually caused by silver sulphide that’s found in crowns and fillings, or an advanced dental cavity that needs treatment.

However the stain appears and whatever it’s caused by, it’s likely to have an effect on your life. After all, some stains can signal that you need to improve your oral hygiene to prevent any further issues in the future. For many people, stained teeth can also affect their self-confidence when they smile. Those with perfect, stain-free smiles might seem enviable, but there’s no reason why you can’t have the perfect smile you’ve always wanted.

There are various recommendations when it comes to treating stains on the teeth. Common recommendations include using baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and apple cider vinegar, amongst others. However, these solutions can be tedious and time-consuming. Of course, the best way to prevent staining is to maintain good oral hygiene and to attend regular dentist appointments, but sometimes our patients need a little more to get rid of stains and restore confidence in their smile. At Parkfield Dental, our AirFlow stain removal is a proven solution. The service is quick, effective, and will have your confidence restored in no time!

What is Stain Removal and How Does it Work?

At Parkfield Dental, our team use a high-tech AirFlow stain removal system to reveal a brighter, whiter smile that’s sure to restore your confidence and have you feeling great about your appearance again. This treatment is designed to tackle harsh stains that are visible on the tooth, but are hard to remove by using regular teeth whitening products or treatments. AirFlow uses a jet of compressed air, water, and fine sodium bicarbonate particles. This is then blasted under high pressure at the surface of the patient’s teeth to blast away any stubborn stains and any plaque on your teeth, returning them to their natural whiteness. It’s much more effective than a standard scale and polish and makes an amazing difference to most smiles. It cleans teeth thoroughly and removes surface staining, giving an instantly whiter smile. Although this treatment is not a tooth whitening therapy, the airflow will significantly improve tooth brightness and give you a noticeably sparkling fresh healthy mouth in an instant.

This treatment does not include chemicals and poses no risk to patients. AirFlow is an advanced polishing treatment that allows you to walk away the same day with amazingly clean results, often in as little as 20 minutes. There’s no need for any pain management or anaesthetic when receiving this treatment – it is completely painless. As well as this, the tooth surface is not damaged during this cleaning procedure. This method is quick and painless, allowing reaching and cleaning all those difficult to access areas such as the tight spaces in between the teeth. Your teeth will be left looking and feeling refreshingly clean. This is also an ideal method to remove any underlying stains or scale before having tooth whitening treatment.

Almost every stain can be removed thanks to AirFlow. We find this treatment to be extremely popular with patients that have severe and visible staining. These patients are often smokers, take medication that affects the appearance of their teeth, or have naturally darker teeth due to their genetics and therefore need more force to tackle their stains. AirFlow is also a great way to tackle common stains caused by food and drink such as curry, wine and coffee, that have pigmented particles which can cause staining.

The Benefits of Using AirFlow

One of the many reasons our patients love AirFlow as a stain removal treatment is because of how quick the treatment is. This painless procedure is perfect for achieving effective results fast, making it the ideal option if you have a big event coming up – such as a wedding, birthday or other special occasion – that you want to look and feel your best self for. WIth results often visible in as little as 20 minutes, there’s no need to take loads of time out of your schedule for your AirFlow treatment.

Whilst AirFlow may be a straightforward and quick solution, the benefits it provides are long-lasting and often life changing. Whilst there are other stain removal treatments out there, the results of AirFlow are unrivaled. In just a matter of minutes, your dentist will have created a smile suitable for Hollywood, giving you a newfound confidence that many patients describe as life changing. If you’re wanting to change the appearance of your teeth effectively, fast and without breaking the bank, AirFlow is the ideal treatment.

Besides the improvement in appearance that comes with the AirFlow procedure, perhaps just as important is the exceptional cleanliness that you’re left with. If your stains have been caused by previous poor oral hygiene, AirFlow allows you to correct this. Moving forward, you’ll be left with a much healthier smile that can be easily maintained with regular cleaning and by booking frequent check ups with your dentist here at Parkfield Dental. Whilst AirFlow is not a tooth whitening procedure, it works to restore the natural whiteness of your smile, making them appear brighter and cleaner than they were before the treatment.

By combining an improvement in the appearance of your teeth with an improvement in their cleanliness too, AirFlow is guaranteed to restore and maximise the confidence you have in your smile. You can feel confident knowing your teeth have been restored to their natural whiteness, and that not only are you showing off a smile that looks good, but it’s healthy and clean too! With this new found confidence thanks to AirFlow, you’ll certainly be left smiling a whole lot more.

I had my first consultation today with Dr Shah. He did a very thorough examination and explained his findings and treatment plan clearly with the aid of photographs and x-ray pictures. Given the quality of the service the fees are very reasonable. Highly recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will it last?

This depends entirely on your diet/smoking/cleaning habits. If you are a big fan of tea, coffee, red wine, and curries, you can expect the staining to return over a few months. If you rarely have these and are a thorough brusher at home, teeth can remain stain-free fur up to a year.
Most patients who choose Airflow Cleaning will have the procedure around once a year, and also just before any special occasions (perfect for weddings!).

The treatment lasts around 30 minutes, during which time the teeth will be cleaned with the air/water/bicarbonate jet. This may be combined with ultrasonic staining for any tartar which may need to be removed. Anaesthetic is not required and the cleaning is pain-free. The only thing is that you may get a little wet.

Airflow cleaning is a great way to simply and effectively brighten your smile. It will remove surface staining but will not lighten the base colour of the teeth. To achieve that, see ‘Teeth Whitening’. Stains that are removable include tea, coffee, wine, curry, chlorhexidine, and tobacco.

Yes, tooth discolouration and stains on the surface of your teeth can be removed or reduced with stain removal treatment or teeth whitening procedures. This includes stains caused by coffee, wine or smoking cigarettes.

Here at Parkfield Dental, we use our high-tech AirFlow stain removal system, which makes use of air, jet water, and a fine powder to gently and blast away plaque and stubborn stains. With this stain removal treatment, you can restore your teeth’s natural whiteness. It is a completely safe procedure that does not include any harmful chemicals.

Think of it as a mini jet wash for your mouth, with a powerful jet of water that can get in-between all the tight nooks and crannies within your teeth. This offers a much more effective procedure with better oral hygiene results in comparison to a standard scale and polish.

Tooth stain removal treatments provided by professional dentists are completely safe, posing no harm to your health, comfort or wellbeing. You can use home-based treatments to remove stains on teeth. For example, you could brush your teeth with baking soda or use hydrogen peroxide. However, treating tooth discolouration at home is nowhere near as effective as doing so with your dentist.

With professional stain removal treatments, the surface of the tooth and your tooth’s enamel will not be damaged in any way. No chemicals are used, just a simple jet of water with a fine powder to get those hard to reach areas within your mouth. The process is quick and painless, often completed within a matter of minutes, leaving your teeth looking and feeling refreshingly clean. Walk away the same day with amazingly clean results.

This procedure can be used to remove any stains or scale from the tooth surface before having a tooth whitening treatment.

If you have brilliantly white teeth, this does not necessarily mean they are healthy. You may have underlying oral hygiene issues or hidden tooth decay that is not visible when you smile. In the same manner, having tooth discolouration or stains on your teeth does not necessarily mean they are unhealthy. Stains on teeth often need just a simple clean, scale and polish with some stain removal treatment for good measure.

In some cases, stains and discolouration can indicate tooth decay or other types of disease. For this reason alone, it is always worth getting stains checked out by your dentist. In the vast majority of cases, there is nothing to worry about, but it is always worth finding out for sure.

The AirFlow polishing hygiene cleaning treatment we use mixes air, jet water, and a fine powder to blast away stubborn stains on teeth. The jet of water is small and concentrated, so although it is powerful enough to blast away plaque, it is extremely gentle and non-painful. You can walk out of your dentist’s surgery with whiter teeth in a matter of minutes.

Cleaning your mouth with water and a fine powder may sound too simple, and you may feel using home-based products like hydrogen peroxide will provide better results. However, the beauty of stain removal treatments is within the simplicity. No harmful chemicals or complicated application processes are required, just a powerful blast of water mixed with sodium bicarbonate or glycine powder.

You can try brushing your teeth with a mixture of baking soda and water, others may choose to use a diluted hydrogen peroxide solution. There are also many different over-the-counter stain removal products that can tackle tooth discolouration. However, with home-based treatments results are not always guaranteed. Even if you do achieve noticeable results, a professional dentist will be able to achieve so much more. For a truly effective stain removal treatment, you should consult your dentist.

At home, you should instead focus your attention on preventing teeth stains before they happen, rather than addressing them afterwards. You can avoid foods that stain tooth enamel, like coffee, wine and dark berries. You can also limit your overall sugar intake, make sure there is plenty of calcium in your diet and brush your teeth regularly with a whitening toothpaste.

Stain Removal

Stain removal is ideal for those with stained enamel, or discolouration of the outer layer of your teeth. Many patients opt for this as a quick, effective and comfortable method of achieving a whiter smile. You can have stain removal treatment as part of a routine hygiene appointment with your dentist. Here, an ultrasonic scaler and hand instruments may be used to remove the larger plaque deposits on your teeth. They are then polished with our AirFlow stain removal kit, where a jet of water mixed with air and fine powder is used to get those hard-to-reach smaller deposits of plaque. This is more beneficial over conventional polish, which can be abrasive against your enamel.

AirFlow will remove biofilm, stains on the tooth surface and early calculus. The results are usually instant, meaning you can leave your dentist’s surgery the very same day with a whiter, brighter smile.

Tooth Whitening

Stain removal treatment is used to simply clean and polish your teeth if they are stained. If you want to actually change the colour of your teeth, or reverse discolouration that cannot be polished away, you will need a professional tooth whitening treatment. This is an extremely popular treatment that leaves your teeth looking almost brand new. An active ingredient is used in this process, usually hydrogen peroxide, to allow oxygen to get into the enamel of your teeth. The procedure is a bit more complicated and lengthier than stain removal treatment, and costs more, but with more effective results.

Choosing between these two treatments will depend largely on your own desires and what you would like to achieve. Speak to us about your options and we will be happy to advise on the best approach for you. Often, both of these treatments are used in conjunction, as stain removal is a good first step before whitening.
