Snoring is the sound made when air is restricted during breathing whilst sleeping. Studies have shown that snoring affects roughly 30% of us, rising to 60% with age. Here at Parkfield Dental we take the treatment of sleep apnoea and snoring very seriously.

In some cases, the sound can be soft. But in most cases, it can be loud and unpleasant. This can lead to disrupting the sleep of your partner or other people you live with. Certain factors affect snoring, such as weight gain, the position of your body during sleep, alcohol, smoking and nasal constriction.

Snoring affects the quality of sleep of the person suffering, as well as the people around them. At best, snoring is embarrassing. At worst, it can cause significant health issues.

Snoring may even be a sign or first alarm of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). We work closely with sleep clinics to help diagnose sleep apnoea and loud snoring. We frequently take on patients referred to us. Parkfield Dental can help with private tests for sleep apnoea, and test the efficacy of dental appliances.

Some of the symptoms of obstructive sleep apnoea include:

  • Loud snoring
  • Episodes in which you stop breathing during sleep
  • Gasping for air and choking during sleep
  • Dry mouth in the morning
  • Morning headaches
  • Difficulty staying and getting to sleep (insomnia)
  • Excessive daytime fatigue (hypersomnia)
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Irritability and short temper

Some of these symptoms can’t be detected by yourself and if you live alone you might not be aware of them. If your partner is concerned about your breathing during sleep then you should seek diagnosis. We always recommend finding professional help if you worry about your health.

The Health Risks Of Sleep Apnoea

When your airway completely closes during the night the oxygen levels in your body are reduced. Not only does this disrupt your sleep by forcing you awake, but sleep apnoea has been linked to a range of health conditions, including:

  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Increased risk of a stroke
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Weight gain
  • Acid reflux

Along with these serious health risks, snoring negatively impacts your everyday life. Because it wakes you frequently throughout the night, your body isn’t able to find the restorative sleep it needs. This causes severe daytime drowsiness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating and irritability. People with sleep apnoea often find themselves underperforming at work and are at greater risk of falling asleep while driving.

How Can We Help?

There’s evidence that oral appliances can substantially reduce snoring and apnoea for many sufferers, especially those diagnosed with mild or moderate apnoea.

Each individual case is different and people snore for a wide range of reasons. This means that oral appliances may not work for everyone, and the same appliance may work for one sufferer and not another.

This is why all patients need proper assessment to determine the severity and nature of their sleep apnoea. At Parkfield some of our patients are referred by medical physicians after diagnosis and sleep study. We’ll assess your individual case/situation at your initial assessment. Then we can discuss your options and look for the right treatment or appliance for you.

We will take moulds of your teeth, jaw positions and fit your chosen appliance and give you instructions on adapting to appliance, helping you to get used to it.
