Teeth Straightening

When we imagine the perfect smile, most people picture clean, white straight teeth. However, not everybody is lucky enough to have naturally straight teeth – misaligned teeth or crooked teeth are very common. For some, this can have severe effects on their confidence and it can even affect their life depending on how much they desire perfectly straight teeth. Whilst not everyone has a naturally straight smile, the good news is that with the help of cosmetic teeth straightening solutions, you can still have the perfect smile in time.

Here at Parkfield Dental in Didsbury, South Manchester, we provide an effective solution to help you achieve a smile makeover that will restore your confidence. With our modern approach to orthodontics using Invisalign, straighter teeth no longer have to be a figment of your imagination, but a reality.

What Causes Crooked Teeth?

Having crooked teeth is common and can be caused by a variety of factors. Some of these factors are out of our control, whilst others – such as habits – are things that we can try to prevent. As children, if our teeth erupt and appear crooked, there is very little that we can do about it other than to wait and see how the teeth fully develop.

The main factor that is out of our control, in relation to misaligned teeth, is genetics. Crooked teeth may be a result of genetics and features that are common in your family, such as crowding, jaw shape and size, hyperdontia (which means that you have too many teeth), overbites, underbites and poor oral development, including palate and tooth development.

Crooked teeth can also be caused by limited gum space as a tooth begins to erupt, or because you lost a baby tooth when you were a child which then became problematic. For example, other teeth may have moved into the area where the baby tooth originally was, resulting in crowding where the permanent tooth would have eventually erupted. Another factor that can cause issues, that is sometimes out of our control, is trauma. Many people have misaligned teeth as a result of an injury, such as an accident whilst playing sport. Whilst we lack control over these causes, the good news is that we can change the appearance of our smile if we wish to, thanks to modern techniques such as Invisalign.

However, whilst there are factors out of our control, we can minimise the chances of having crooked teeth. Maintaining a good standard of oral hygiene is perhaps the most vital, to minimise the risk of gingivitis. If we develop gum disease because of poor dental hygiene, this can cause teeth to shift, and therefore appear crooked. It is also important to get enough nutrients in your diet. Nutrients such as calcium and Vitamin D are essential for bone and tissue development, which are important for keeping teeth healthy. If you do not get enough of these nutrients, this may result in crooked teeth as well as other developmental issues.

How to Straighten Your Teeth

A beautiful smile can be achieved easily with orthodontic treatments. Straightening your teeth at home should not be attempted – for the majority of people, braces or aligners are the safest and most effective methods for permanent teeth straightening. There are online remedies and tutorials for teeth straightening procedures out there that recommend a range of dangerous tips. This can involve borrowed retainers, self-made equipment and home remedies. It is very unlikely that these tips will work. Instead, you should with one of our highly-qualified dentists to determine the best solution for you, to achieve a straight smile.

Before commencing with your treatment to straighten your teeth, you can book a free consultation with our treatment coordinator. In this appointment, you will discuss the issues you would like to correct in order to achieve your perfect smile. Your dentist will examine your oral hygiene to ensure that you are suitable for treatment – sometimes, orthodontic treatments may increase the risk of gum problems and tooth decay, so having good oral health is important.

Following your detailed one-on-one consultation and the examinations to confirm your suitability, your dentist will obtain X-ray images as well as images from our digital scanner to inform your treatment plan and to create the aligners that will be used. The solution available here at Parkfield Dental is modern and designed to achieve a straight smile in a way that is pain-free and effective. We are specialists in Invisalign and offer personalised treatment plans depending on your own circumstances and goals. We are committed to building great relationships with our patients from the initial consultation, to truly understand their needs and to give them the perfect smile.

As with many orthodontic treatments, you may find that during the course of your treatment, other issues are also corrected in the process of creating a straight smile. For example, additional benefits may include the correction of crowded teeth and an overbite, as well as the reduction in the risk of damage to any prominent teeth. It is also important to note that the duration of treatment will vary from patient to patient, depending on your teeth and your goals. Your dentist will discuss this with you at your consultation, where you’ll receive a personalised plan. Overall, our treatments are designed to give you the perfect smile and boost your confidence.

The Solution: Using Invisalign for Straighter Teeth

At Parkfield Dental, we offer Invisalign as the method for achieving straight teeth. This is a popular option that uses modern orthodontic techniques to achieve the perfect smile, without the need for uncomfortable metal braces. Each patient will receive a personalised plan that maps out their Invisalign process to achieve their goal. The treatment is also a great option for those that would like to correct crowded teeth, gap teeth, an overbite, an underbite, a cross bite or an open bite.

The Invisalign System is designed to provide the perfect smile with virtually invisible aligners. The process is accurate, efficient and gentle – it is completely pain-free as it uses custom-made aligners that will aid the movement of your teeth gradually over time. The treatment is straightforward and does not restrict you or affect your lifestyle.

Following your consultation and the relevant examinations, you will receive your first aligner which should be worn daily. You will then receive a series of aligners, with new ones to be worn every 1-2 weeks. These will be fitted at home and you will visit us every 6-8 weeks for a check-up appointment so that we can monitor your progress and give you your next set of new aligners. Once the treatment has been completed, you will receive a retainer to wear that will maintain your straight smile.

You will need to take care of your aligners throughout the course of the treatment and you should wash them regularly with lukewarm water. In the event that you do lose or break your aligner, get in touch with us and our team will order a replacement and recommend a solution in the meantime.

There are several benefits to choosing Invisalign, which doesn’t use traditional metal braces during the process. Instead, the aligners are comfortable and most patients do not experience the discomfort that is often associated with the fitting or the adjustment of traditional braces. Whilst Invisalign is tailored exactly to your needs and goals, the treatment is usually completed in an average of 6-18 months. Unlike braces that have visible metal wires, your aligners are virtually invisible. As a result, you don’t have to worry about having noticeable braces – Invisalign is a discrete treatment which is one of the many reasons our patients choose it as their solution for straight teeth. Another one of the most appreciated benefits amongst our patients is the fact that the removable aligners can be taken out at meal times, allowing you to enjoy your food as you normally would. Most patients must wear their aligners for at least 22 hours, but these couple of hours without the aligners allow you to eat as you normally would.

The cost of Invisalign can vary, but a single arch will cost from £2000 and a dual arch starts at £3000. We do offer payment plans with interest-free finance to help you pay for the treatment over a period of time. To book a professional consultation for Invisalign, get in touch with the team by email at emma@parkfield-dental.co.uk  or by calling 0161 327 0817.

FAQs

How much is it to straighten teeth?

The treatment options vary in price here at Parkfield Dental but our solution for teeth straightening is an affordable option compared to other alternatives. Prices will also vary depending on every patient’s needs and dental goals, but generally, Invisalign prices start at £2000 for a single arch and £3000 for a dual arch. All prices will be discussed in your initial consultation and we also offer payment plans and interest-free finance options to help you pay for your treatment. These options allow you to spread the cost of your treatment over an agreed period of time. If you would like to find out more about these payment options, these can be discussed with our treatment coordinator or at your initial consultation.

It might be tempting to try and straighten your teeth at home, to avoid wearing a brace or paying for the cost of in-practice teeth straightening. There are several DIY remedies and tips online for a straight smile, all of which are extremely dangerous to perform. As well as this, ‘home teeth straightening kits’ from the internet are now increasingly popular for those wishing for a straighter smile. Whilst these home kits might seem like the best option as they’re cheaper and allow you to carry out the treatment at home without braces, there are still many dangers that come with attempting to straighten your teeth at home.

With a home kit, you lack the presence of a professional, which can become problematic. Dentists are carefully trained and know the best practices for providing safe but effective solutions for straight teeth. Before you start any form of orthodontic treatment, we would recommend that you have a dented examination to assess your gums and teeth for any issues that may delay or affect your treatment. With home treatment, you cannot carry out these checks – they require an expert. With a treatment designed and carried out by a qualified dentist, they will monitor your progress, adapting the programme if necessary to ensure that you get the desired results. Home kits do not deliver this level of personalisation, meaning that your results also aren’t as effective as a treatment carried out at our practice.

Straightening treatment can be started during your early teens, all the way up to late adulthood. For those under the age of 18, a free assessment is usually available on the NHS but this could result in a long wait for the treatment to commence. The treatment available on the NHS usually involves metal braces, so our Invisalign treatment is still highly popular with those that want a discrete treatment that is virtually invisible. Whilst NHS treatment is reviewed case-by-case for adults, it is uncommon, and so our treatment is also popular with those over 18 that want to achieve the perfect smile. There is no age limit to Invisalign – it is never too late to straighten your teeth!

Veneers are often considered a method for achieving a straight smile. Porcelain veneers are applied to the front of the teeth – usually the most visible ones – for a straight, white smile. Veneers can be applied to teeth that are straight or crooked, and overbites and underbites are not problematic in the process either. However, if your teeth overlap each other, it is difficult for dentists to apply veneers to the surface of these. If your teeth overlap, it might be worth considering a tooth straightening treatment before having veneers applied.

Whilst applying veneers can create the appearance of a straight smile, it will not naturally alter the positioning of your teeth. Using veneers is usually an option when there is only one tooth or a couple of teeth that appear crooked, such as your two front teeth. The process can also be more expensive than Invisalign which is our chosen solution for straight teeth.

Many people believe that when wisdom teeth erupt, they push others out of the way and subsequently, these can move and often overlap. However, this is simply a misconception. When they do come through, they do not cause enough pressure for other teeth to crowd as a result. Similarly, contrary to somewhat popular belief, your teeth will not shift following the extraction of a wisdom tooth.

As with most procedures, there are benefits and risks to be considered regarding wisdom tooth removal. An impacted wisdom tooth can be highly problematic and you should discuss removal with your dentist if you are experiencing pain or discomfort as a result of their eruption but, generally, having crooked teeth is not a reason to remove them. If you do have misaligned teeth, it is unlikely that your wisdom teeth are to blame and you should therefore consider other alternatives for a straight smile, such as Invisalign aligners.

There is no definitive answer to this question because the duration of treatment varies for each patient depending on their plan and their dental goals. However, when deciding on the right tooth straightening treatment for you, the time scales are only one aspect to consider. Your chosen solution should be selected based on the predicted final result and how well it will suit your needs. Your initial consultation with one of our dentists will give you the opportunity to discuss your options and ask any questions, to make an informed decision about whether the Invisalign treatment is best for you.

Braces work by applying pressure to the teeth which causes them to gradually move in a specific direction over a period of time. The bone underneath will also change in shape. The clear aligners used in the Invisalign treatment are like clear plastic trays that fit securely to the teeth and, like braces, these also work by applying pressure, causing them to move into certain positions that result in a straight smile.

Clear aligners are usually considered a lot more comfortable than traditional metal braces, as they are removable and allow you to enjoy food as you usually would. Throughout the duration of your treatment, you will have several appointments with your dentist. They can then check the progress of your personalised plan, ensuring that your aligners are working as they should and that you are on track to achieving the desired result.
