Gum Disease – Are You Sure You Have Healthy Gums? Didsbury Manchester

Gum disease, also referred to as gingivitis, occurs when there is inflammation of the tissue surrounding the teeth. Furthermore, it is most commonly caused by poor dental hygiene, and its common issue can vary tremendously in severity.

What are the symptoms of gum disease?

First of all, there are a number of possible indicators that you might have gum disease, whether gingivitis or more advanced periodontitis. These symptoms include:

  • Bleeding gums
  • Swollen, inflamed gums
  • Receding gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Bad breath
  • Pus coming from the gums

What causes gum disease?

Gum disease or gingivitis is mainly caused by poor oral hygiene, which results in bacteria building up on the teeth and infecting the gums. Other factors can increase your risk of developing gingivitis, some as the factors include:

  • Smoking prevents gums from healing.
  • Crooked or overlapping teeth allow for more areas where plaque can hide.
  • Stress reduces the body’s immune response to bacteria.
  • Cancer treatment can cause the body to be more susceptible to infection and increase the risk of gum disease.
  • Hormonal changes during pregnancy, puberty or menopause cause the blood vessels in the gums to be more susceptible to bacteria.
  • A diet high in sugar and carbohydrates can increase the risk of plaque.
  • Certain medications can increase the risk of gum disease.

How to prevent gum disease?

  • Make regular visits to your dentist for a dental health check, where your gums will be screened for signs of gum disease.
  • Similarly, regular appointments with your hygienist for a professional clean to remove any tartar and advise you on how you can maintain high standards at home.
  • Brush and clean in between your teeth twice daily to remove plaque from the surfaces of your teeth.
  • Reduce your risk by addressing factors such as smoking and controlling diabetes.
