Dental Implants are a great way of replacing missing teeth. Here at Parkfield Dental Practice, we have, above all, an extremely high success rate, although sometimes an implant can fail due to a form of gum disease called Peri-implantitis.
Peri-implantitis is an inflammatory disease, marked by bacterial infection and the gradual loss of bone around a dental implant. Not only does this cause inflammation, however, but it can also cause the bone to recede, loosening its grip on the dental implant. Peri-implantitis can occur at any time after an implant has been placed, even several years later.
• Not always symptomatic
• Possible dull ache, tenderness on brushing or touch
• Bad taste possible if pus is present
• Possible mobility
• Swollen lymph nodes
There are a number of risks, including:
• Poor oral hygiene
• Nicotine/tobacco use
• Poorly controlled systemic conditions (e.g. diabetes, osteoporosis)
• History of periodontitis
• Bruxism (grinding of teeth)
A good oral health care routine, which includes regular brushing, interdental cleaning and regular dental checks at our practice in Didsbury, goes a long way in the prevention of Peri-implantitis. Most noteworthy, it is far better to spot and treat the early warning signs before reaching the point where consequently damage is done to the bone.
Treating Peri-implantitis can be extremely challenging. First of all, we begin with meticulously
cleaning under the gum of the implant using ultrasonic scalers and jet-polishing. There may also be grafting with bone materials required, in order to replace the missing bone tissue or thicken the surrounding gum. Furthermore, you may also be required to take a course of antibiotics.
