There are few phrases in dentistry that produce more dread than “root canal.” Ask most people what they imagine and you’ll hear words like painful, lengthy, terrifying. Ask Dr Muna Hussain, who is completing a Masters degree in Endodontics (the clinical name for root canal treatment) – and she’ll tell you something quite different.
“I often describe a root canal treatment as quite a boring appointment for the patient,” says Muna. “Long, yes. But boring. Not painful.”
That single sentence probably does more to reassure nervous patients than any brochure. And it comes from someone who has studied the subject at the highest level – currently completing postgraduate training in endodontics that goes well beyond what most dentists receive.
If you’ve been told you need root canal treatment and you’re putting it off – or you’re quietly hoping the toothache will go away on its own – this is worth reading.
Root canal treatment is the treatment of a painful or infected tooth. The procedure involves removing bacteria from inside the tooth, cleaning and disinfecting the root canals, so that your body can heal itself naturally.
“It’s your body that heals itself afterwards,” Muna explains. “I do my part, and then we let your body do the rest.”
The pain most people associate with root canal treatment doesn’t come from the procedure itself. It comes from the fact that the tooth being treated is already causing pain or discomfort. Once the source of infection is removed and the tooth is properly numbed, the treatment is far more manageable than most people expect.
“A very, very small minority of patients feel any sort of sensitivity during treatment,” Muna says. “And the way we manage that is really by starting at the beginning – by making sure a correct diagnosis is made before we do anything else.”
Before any root canal treatment begins at Parkfield Dental, Muna carries out a thorough assessment. This involves going through the symptoms you’ve been experiencing, testing how the nerve is responding, and in many cases taking images of the tooth -whether a standard X-ray or a 3D scan of the root structure.
“Most of these investigations are done in-house,” she says. “You don’t need to go elsewhere. And because you’re with us throughout, nothing should feel too unfamiliar.”
This matters for more than just comfort. Muna’s postgraduate training means she can diagnose the source of dental pain with a higher level of accuracy – and treat more complex root canal cases in-house rather than referring patients elsewhere.
“When you come in with dental pain, you’re much more likely to get a precise diagnosis of exactly what’s causing it,” she explains, “and be able to treatment plan the best course of action for you. It also means we’re able to treat more of your cases here, with a dentist you already know and have a rapport with.”
For many patients, one of the most anxiety-inducing aspects of specialist treatment isn’t the procedure – it’s being referred to an unfamiliar clinic and starting from scratch. At Parkfield, the aim is to keep complex cases within the team you already trust wherever possible.
Before treatment begins, Muna takes you through a thorough consent process — covering the reasons your tooth needs treatment, the success rate and prognosis for your specific case, what alternatives exist, and what you can expect at each stage. Nothing is rushed, and nothing proceeds until you’re entirely comfortable.
“We work together so we can make sure you have the treatment you’re most comfortable with,” she says. “And if you want to discuss alternatives, that’s absolutely fine too.”
During the appointment, most patients are under local anaesthetic, with numbing injections given carefully and at your pace.
“We use numbing gel first to make sure you’re as comfortable as possible,” Muna explains. “And we give as much as you need.”
A rubber dam — a small protective sheet — is placed over the tooth to protect both you and the tooth from any risk of reinfection. Music or a podcast? Muna takes requests. The appointment can be long because the work happens in very small areas and precision matters. But most patients describe the experience as much closer to a routine filling than the ordeal they’d been dreading.
For patients who feel they need additional support, sedation is also available in-house — so even the most anxious patients don’t need to go without the care they need.
Once the root canal is complete, the tooth is sealed with a filling. In most cases, a crown is then planned to protect the tooth long-term – and all of this is mapped out with you in advance so there are no surprises.
Muna’s approach – careful diagnosis, transparent planning, skilled and gentle treatment – reflects a broader ethos at Parkfield Dental: that the right care, done well from the start, is always better than avoiding treatment until something becomes urgent.
If you’ve been told you need root canal treatment and you’d like to understand your options, the best place to start is a conversation.
