What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment removes infected and damaged tissues from inside your tooth to relieve pain and halt infection.

Root canal treatment is the first line of defence for saving a tooth that has an abscess or that has been fractured, infected or decayed. The purpose is to cleanse the tooth and bring it and the surrounding tissues to a healthy state, relieving both pain and infection. If you have a tooth with an infected nerve, then a root canal is the treatment you need.

Without root canal treatment, the only other alternative is to have the infected tooth removed and replaced with an implant, a fixed bridge or a removable denture. Of course, the ideal option is to save your tooth instead of extracting it, and root canal treatment can help you do that.

In the long run, a root canal treatment is also the more cost-effective option when compared with extracting and replacing your tooth. Root canal treatment also has a high success rate, as treated teeth can remain healthy for many years to come.

Your treatment journey: what to expect when you get root canal treatment

  1. Schedule an initial consultation

At your first visit, we will examine your tooth and take an X-ray or two to determine what kind of treatment it needs. If you are not suffering from severe dental pain, the dentist will probably want to complete a comprehensive oral health examination in order to get a complete picture of your dental health. But if you are dealing with a dental emergency such as a toothache or dental abscess that requires urgent treatment, then that is the very first thing we will address.

  2. Have your root canal treatment

After examining your tooth and creating a treatment plan, the dentist may recommend root canal treatment. We can start this on the same day of your first visit, if your case is urgent. If it is not urgent, we can book this appointment at a day and time that is convenient for you.

  3. Restore your tooth

Some teeth are very weak after root canal treatment and need to be reinforced with a dental restoration. If the dentist who performs your root canal recommends that you have your tooth restored, then this will probably happen at a future visit. We generally like to allow some time to pass after your root canal treatment to ensure that your tooth is responding well before we permanently seal it off with a filling or crown.

  4. Follow-up and maintenance

A tooth that has had root canal treatment should remain strong and healthy for a lifetime. But we will want to check on it periodically to make sure there is no chance of fracture or reinfection.

Frequently asked questions about root canal treatment

What happens if I don’t get root canal treatment?

Once the nerve inside your tooth is compromised or infected, it cannot heal and it is not recommended to leave an infected tooth in the mouth. Your only alternative is to extract the tooth and replace it with a dental implant, dental bridge or partial denture. Although some people would prefer extraction, it is usually best to keep as many natural teeth as possible.

What will my tooth look like after root canal treatment?

Your tooth will not look any different on the outside after root canal treatment. In some cases, teeth become discoloured after treatment, but we have other treatments to restore your tooth’s natural appearance if it does become discoloured.

What does root canal treatment involve?

The goal of root canal treatment is to remove all infection from the root canal. The infected nerve is removed, and the root is then cleaned and filled to prevent any further infection. Any abscesses, which may be present, can also be drained and treated at this time.

Does it hurt to get root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment is normally carried out under local anaesthetic and the sensation is just like what you experience when you get an ordinary dental filling. Any pain that is associated with root canal treatment usually results from the infection or injury that necessitated treatment in the first place.

How do I know if I really need root canal treatment?

In general, root canal treatment is necessary when there is no other way to save your tooth. If your tooth is in extreme pain or has suffered nerve damage or has an infection, then your only treatment options are likely to be either extraction or root canal treatment. When you visit our practice, we will carefully explain all of your treatment options and show you on an HD screen the findings of the dentist’s examination so that you can fully understand our rationale for recommending root canal treatment.
