What Are Dental Implants – and How Do They Work?

A dental implant is a small titanium post placed into the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root. Once it integrates with the bone – a process called osseointegration – a custom-made crown, bridge, or denture is fixed on top, giving you a permanent, stable tooth that looks, feels, and functions just like the real thing.

Unlike dentures, which sit on the gum, or bridges, which rely on neighbouring teeth for support, an implant stands entirely on its own. There is nothing to remove at night, nothing to adhesive in place, and no grinding down of healthy teeth.

Modern dental implantology has been refined over more than 40 years of clinical research. Today, implants carry a long-term success rate of over 95% in healthy patients β€” making them the gold standard for permanent tooth replacement.

  • Treatment time: 4-8 months for most single-implant cases
  • Cost: Single implant and crown from Β£2,945
  • Suitable for: Adults 18+ who are missing one or more teeth
  • Finance: 0% interest and extended plans available via Tabeo

Please note: dental implant treatment at Parkfield Dental is provided privately β€” we are not an NHS practice. As a private clinic we offer the time, CBCT scanning and carefully tailored planning that implant treatment deserves, with flexible finance and membership options to keep care affordable.

In-House CBCT Scanning – Seeing the Full Picture Before We Begin

Successful dental implant treatment starts long before the surgery itself. At Parkfield Dental, every implant patient undergoes a comprehensive assessment that includes a cone beam CT (CBCT) scan – a three-dimensional X-ray that gives our implantologist a precise image of your jawbone density, height, and width, as well as the location of nerves and blood vessels.

This level of detail is critical. It allows us to confirm whether you have sufficient bone to support an implant, identify any anatomy that needs to be accounted for during placement, and plan the exact angle and depth of each implant before the day of surgery. For complex cases – including multiple implants, full-arch restorations, and immediate placement following extraction – this planning stage is what makes predictable outcomes possible.

Because our CBCT scanner is on-site, you receive your scan at the same practice where you will be treated. There are no referrals to external imaging centres, no delays in getting your results, and no gaps in the care team’s understanding of your case. Everything is reviewed and planned under one roof, by the clinician who will place your implant.

Immediate Implants – Extraction and Placement in the Same Visit

When a tooth needs to be removed, many patients assume they must wait months before an implant can be placed. At Parkfield Dental, for appropriate cases, we offer immediate implant placement – placing the titanium implant directly into the extraction socket at the same appointment the tooth is removed.

This approach, when planned correctly using CBCT imaging, eliminates an entire waiting phase from your treatment. There is no need for a socket preservation procedure in between – we assess the bone at the time of extraction, and where the conditions are right, we proceed with implant placement immediately.

The benefits to you are significant:

  • Fewer appointments and a shorter overall treatment timeline
  • The extraction socket supports the implant during initial healing
  • Less disruption to the surrounding bone and soft tissue
  • A provisional tooth can often be fitted on the same day

Not every extraction site is suitable for immediate placement – bone quality, infection status, and the geometry of the socket all play a role. Our implantologist assesses each case individually using your CBCT scan to determine the safest and most effective approach for you.

Why Choose Parkfield Dental for Your Dental Implants?

Not all dental implant providers are the same. Placing an implant is a surgical procedure that requires advanced training beyond a standard dental degree – and at Parkfield Dental, our implantologist holds one of the highest postgraduate qualifications available in the UK.

Dr Arfeen Aslam (BDS Lond, MFDS RCS Ed) graduated from Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ School of Dentistry at King’s College London – one of the UK’s most respected dental schools – and has been a Member of the Faculty of Dental Surgeons of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) since 2012. He has completed a dedicated year-long postgraduate programme in implant placement and has since placed implants for patients ranging from single-tooth cases to full-mouth rehabilitation with same-day teeth.

Dr Aslam bring an exceptional depth of implant-specific training to every case at Parkfield Dental. All treatment plans are reviewed against your CBCT scan before any surgery takes place.
