As cases of mouth cancer continue to rise across the UK, raising awareness and promoting early detection has never been more vital. By understanding the risks, recognising the symptoms, and prioritising regular check-ups, we can all play a part in reducing the impact of this disease.
The number of people affected by mouth cancer is increasing at an alarming rate. In the UK, there were over 10,800 new cases diagnosed last year, a rise of 38% in the last decade and 133% compared with 20 years ago. More than half of these cases appear on the tongue or tonsils, and sadly, 3,637 people lost their lives to the disease in the past year alone.
The earlier mouth cancer is diagnosed, the greater the chances of recovery. Survival rates range from 18% to 57%, depending on where the cancer develops and how soon it is found. That is why campaigns like Mouth Cancer Action Month are so important, they remind us that prevention and early detection truly save lives.
Experts do not know exactly what causes every case of mouth cancer, but research shows that up to 90% are linked to lifestyle factors. Smoking increases the risk by up to ten times, and heavy alcohol consumption is linked to nearly a third of all cases. When smoking and drinking are combined, the risk of developing mouth cancer is three times higher.
Other potential risk factors include poor diet, excessive sun exposure to the lips, and infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV). The good news is that by making small lifestyle adjustments, such as quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake, and maintaining regular dental visits, we can significantly lower our risk.
At Parkfield Dental Practice, we encourage every patient to become familiar with the early warning signs of mouth cancer. The most common symptoms include:
If you notice any of these, it is important to get checked straight away. A simple 45-second oral cancer screening during your routine appointment can make all the difference.
If it has been more than 12 months since your last appointment, we encourage you to book a visit with our friendly team. As your trusted dentist in Didsbury Manchester, we carry out comprehensive oral examinations that can detect early signs of mouth cancer as well as other dental issues.
Our focus on preventive dentistry helps protect your long-term oral health. Regular check-ups, good hygiene practices, and understanding the stages of gum disease all contribute to maintaining a healthy mouth. By addressing potential issues early, we can prevent them from developing into more serious problems.
This November, there are several simple ways to support Mouth Cancer Action Month:
