Your First Visit to a New Dentist in Manchester; What to Expect at Parkfield

The first appointment with a new dentist is one of those small moments most of us quietly dread. You don’t know the building, you don’t know the team, you don’t know whether you’ll be told off for not flossing, and you don’t know how much it’ll cost.

This guide walks you through exactly what happens at your first visit to Parkfield Dental in Didsbury — a Manchester-based private practice that’s been welcoming new patients since 1978. Read it before your appointment and 90% of the unknown disappears.

Before you arrive — booking and confirmation

Once you’ve requested a new patient appointment (via our form, by phone on 0161 445 2397, or by WhatsApp on 07862 198 756), our reception team will be in touch within one working day.

They’ll match you with the right dentist for your needs — for example, if you mention you’re interested in Invisalign or implants, you’ll be booked with a clinician who has the relevant specialism. If you’ve not got anything specific in mind, you’ll be booked with whichever dentist has the next available slot.

You’ll receive:

  • A confirmation email with your appointment date, time and dentist’s name
  • A short medical history form to complete in advance (online — no paper)
  • Directions and parking advice for 637 Wilmslow Road, Didsbury

When you arrive — the first 5 minutes

Parkfield is on Wilmslow Road, just past Didsbury village. There’s metered parking directly outside, plus a few side streets with free parking within a 3-minute walk.

When you walk in, you’ll be welcomed by our reception team — most likely Urszula (our assistant manager) or one of the team. They’ll:

  • Check you in and confirm your medical history
  • Offer you a drink (tea, coffee, water — we mean it)
  • Show you the waiting area, which is bright, calm and deliberately un-clinical

If you’re anxious, tell us at this point. It changes how the next 45 minutes run — your dentist will introduce themselves before you sit in the chair, talk you through every step, and check in regularly throughout the appointment.

Meeting your dentist — the next 5 minutes

Your dentist will come out to the waiting room to greet you personally rather than expecting you to walk through to the surgery alone. (Small detail, big difference for first-time nerves.)

The first part of the appointment is conversation, not examination. You’ll talk through:

  • Your dental history — when did you last visit a dentist? Any treatment you remember?
  • Your medical history — any conditions, medications, allergies
  • Your concerns — anything you’ve noticed (a sensitive tooth, bleeding gums, a chip)
  • Your goals — anything you’d want to change about your smile, even if you’re not sure it’s possible

There’s no rush. The questions you’re asked here shape everything that follows.

The clinical examination — about 25 minutes

This is the part most people associate with “going to the dentist”, but at Parkfield it takes longer and covers more ground than a standard check-up.

Your dentist will assess:

  • Every tooth, one by one — checking for decay, cracks, wear, and any restorations (fillings, crowns) that need attention
  • Your gums and supporting bone — measuring gum pocket depths, looking for signs of gum disease
  • Your bite — how your upper and lower teeth meet, whether there’s grinding wear or jaw discomfort
  • Soft tissues — cheeks, tongue, throat and floor of the mouth, as part of our oral cancer screening (which we do at every new patient and routine visit)
  • Existing dental work — checking the condition of any fillings, crowns, bridges or implants you already have

You’ll then have two intraoral x-rays — small, low-radiation digital images that show what’s happening underneath the gum line and between teeth where the eye can’t see. These are included in your £80 fee.

If you’re nervous about any part of this, your dentist will pause as needed, explain what they’re doing, and never push past your comfort level.

The discussion — about 10 minutes

This is where most first visits to a new Manchester dentist genuinely differ from what you might be used to.

Your dentist will sit down with you (not loom over you in the chair) and walk you through what they’ve found. You’ll see:

  • Your x-rays on a monitor — explained in plain English
  • A written care plan — what (if anything) needs treatment, what’s optional, and what’s purely cosmetic if you ever want it
  • A transparent quote — written down, no surprises, broken down per treatment

You won’t be asked to commit to anything on the day. Most patients leave their first visit with a plan, take it home to think about, and book their first follow-up appointment a week or two later. That’s the right way to do it.

What it costs — and what happens after

Your first visit at Parkfield is ÂŁ80, normally ÂŁ92. That fee covers the full 45-minute examination, the two x-rays, and the written care plan. There are no hidden add-ons.

If you decide to proceed with any treatment, you’ll be quoted in writing before any clinical work begins. If you don’t proceed, you walk away with a plan you can take to any dentist in Manchester — no obligation whatsoever.

After your visit, you’ll receive:

  • A copy of your written care plan by email
  • An invitation to book your routine follow-up (typically 6 months later for examination, 3–6 months for hygiene depending on gum health)
  • An optional invitation to join our dental membership plan if you’d like to spread the cost of ongoing care

If you’re anxious — read this

Around 1 in 4 UK adults avoids the dentist because of anxiety. If that’s you, please don’t feel embarrassed — we see it every week, and we’ve built the whole new-patient experience around making it easier.

What helps:

  • Tell us in advance. Either when you book, or in a note on the form. Knowing means we can plan a longer, gentler first visit.
  • Bring someone with you. A partner, friend or family member can sit in the room with you for the full examination. We genuinely encourage it.
  • Set a stop signal. Agree a hand signal with your dentist that means “pause” — and they’ll stop immediately, every time, without question.
  • Start small. If a full examination feels like too much, book a 15-minute “meet the dentist” chat first. No instruments, no examination — just a conversation, free of charge.

You don’t have to fix anything on day one. The only goal of your first visit is for you to leave feeling like you’ve found the right team for the long term.
